Gettysburg remembered — The Maine veterans are this week enjoying the 50th anniversary of this historic date on the old battlefield of Gettysburg, where so many lost their lives. The Maine organizations that were at Gettysburg were the Second Fifth and Sixth Batteries, the First Maine Cavalry Co. D, Second United States Sharpshooters Tenth Maine Battalion, and the following infantry regiments: Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Nineteenth and Twentieth.
Circus comes to town — The Downie and Wheeler’s Circus showed in Houlton, Wednesday, and while the outfit was not as large as many others that have been here, yet the quality of the performance was of the best.

Notes from Crystal — Preston White of Ellsworth has been spending several nights with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Dean White in their camp at Hersey; he made the trip from Ellsworth here and back on a bicycle. Donald Main, Leland Barker and Freeman Barker who have been employed on the tarvia road crew were home to spend the week end. Kenneth Smith severely burned his hand with a firecracker while celebrating Independence Day.
Search for Maine’s “Potato Boy” — The Maine Development Commission’s search for a red headed, freckle faced Aroostook County potato boy is bringing plenty of results. Names of area youth submitted to date are: Davis Rogers and Laurel R. Boynton, Patten; Robert Smith and Frank Barrett, Bridgewater; Gordon Benn, Hodgdon; Ralph Williams Jr., Houlton; Vincent Ellwood Hare and Gene Nickerson, Monticello; Ralph Lee Butterfield, Weston; Maynard A. Sherman, Island Falls; and Donald McLaughlin, Dyer Brook.
50 Years Ago-July 4, 1963

Stocked with salmon and trout — The State’s Fish and Game Department recently stocked area lakes, ponds and brooks. Moose and Cook’s brooks each received 200 trout ranging from six to eight inches. Drew’s Lake was stocked with 3,000 and Pleasant Pond in Island Falls with 3,300 four to six-inch salmon. Nickerson Lake received 4,000 brown togue and Timoney Lake in Oakfield received 10,000 fingerlings.
Do-it-yourself dry cleaning — Do-it-yourself dry cleaning is being introduced to the area at the Bridgewater Laundromat. Harold McIllroy Jr. said the coin-operated Westinghouse has been installed and is simple to operate. “Any homemaker who can use an automatic toaster will be able to do her own dry cleaning, “ he said.

Summertime happenings — The Danforth Fire Department held its annual Field Day on June 25 with a parade, cookout, flea market, children’s games, an auction and evening talent show filling out the day’s events. In her column, “Riding ‘round Aroostook,” Bambi Barnes invites all to attend the Aroostook Riding Club Horse Show at Houlton’s Millar Arena on July 10. Houlton Agricultural Fair President Kathie Hammond confirmed the 1988 fair as “a success” with an estimated 10,000 attending the three-day event and a record 3500 to 4000 present for the Monday night fireworks display.
