CARIBOU — The fourth annual Caribou Summer Viking Wrestling Camp is scheduled for July 8-12 at Caribou High School.
The clinician will be James “Chico” Hernandez, varsity wrestling coach at CHS.
Hernandez is Maine’s first and only wrestler inducted into the AAU National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Maine Sports Hall of Fame. He owns 44 international wrestling titles and is a 31-time National AAU All-American in Sombo, freestyle, Greco-Roman and American Folkstyle wrestling.
He wrestled at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and is a member of the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Hernandez was featured on a box of Wheaties Energy Crunch cereal and was also featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd.”
During his coaching career, Hernandez has coached two Amateur Wrestling News high school All-Americans, one New England high school champion, two All-New England wrestlers, four high school state champions and 17 state place winners in three different states.
At the upcoming camp, grades 4-8 will meet from 9:30-11:30 a.m. all five days, with a registration fee of $25. Grades 9-12 will meet from 1-3 p.m., with a fee of $30.
Checks should be made payable to the Caribou High School Athletic Department. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. July 8.
