Festival in FF features sports

    FORT FAIRFIELD — At this year’s Maine Potato Blossom Festival, sports are prevalent among the list of events taking place.

    On Tuesday, July 16, the girls’ softball tournaments for the ages 9-12 and 13-16 age divisions is planned at the Fort Fairfield Athletic Complex. The tourney begins at 8:30 a.m. and if not completed that day will continue into Wednesday, July 17.
    The annual three-on-three basketball tournament for ages 16 and older will be held at the community center gymnasium beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 16. The entry fee for the double-elimination event is $40 per team. Teams can register in advance by calling the recreation office at 472-3882.
    On Wednesday, July 17, the Potato Blossom swim meet is slated to begin at 9 a.m. at the municipal pool. Recreation swim teams from Aroostook County will take part.

    A horseshoe tourney is scheduled Thursday, July 18 beginning at 5 p.m. at Riverside Park West. The fee is $5 per person or $10 per team.
    Aroostook Valley Country Club’s three-person golf scramble begins at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20.

    The Potato Blossom 5-Miler Road Race will also be held Saturday, July 20. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., the walker’s division gets under way at 8:30 a.m. and the runners take off at 9 a.m. The race begins on Main Street, across from Hillside IGA, and the registration fee is $15.
    The Regatta on the Aroostook for canoes and kayaks will be held at Forbes Gravel Pit, six miles north of Fort Fairfield on Rt. 161, beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 20. Registration gets under way at 3 p.m. and the fee is $12 per person.
    The Spud Cycle Classic is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday, July 21. beginning in front of the block house on Main Street. Registration is held at 8 a.m. at the community center. The registration fee is $15 for adults and $10 for youth under 18 years of age.
    Those participating in the road race and regatta Saturday, July 20 and the bike race Sunday, July 21 will have their times combined to determine female and male triathlon champions.
