MARS HILL — Joe Levesque was hired recently as the new girls’ basketball coach at Central Aroostook High School, becoming the program’s fourth coach in the last four years.
Levesque takes over for Megan McCarthy, who held the position during the 2012-13 season and has taken a job downstate. Last year’s team went 6-12, placed 16th in Eastern Maine Class D and fell short of qualifying for the playoffs.
CAHS athletic director Ryan Guerrette said Levesque has a tough job ahead of him, but feels he is ready for the challenge.
“We had 11 players in the program last year who played either JV or varsity, seven of which were seniors. Plus we only have three incoming freshman that played basketball last year,” Guerrette said.
“But we felt it was the right time for Joe to move to the varsity level and he’s the right person to add stability to the program. He is a local guy with ties to the school as he graduated from CAHS, lives in the community, and has kids that are in the school.”
Rodney Codrey coached the team through the 2010-11 season. Stori Shaw held the job during the 2011-12 season before McCarthy stepped in last year.
Levesque has coached basketball at the JV level for four years — three with the boys and one with the girls. He is also getting ready for his second season as the girls’ varsity soccer coach after having coached the junior high girls for four seasons.
