Driven to drink — From an editorial titled, “Food and Drink”…Recent discussions of the temperance question seem to carry it home more than formerly. These days many girls are not ashamed to confess that they are absolutely ignorant of the art of

cooking, even though it will fall upon them to prepare food for their families. Dyspepsia, induced by poorly cooked food, has doubtless turned more than one man to strong drink in his efforts to find relief.
Public school appointments — The following appointments for ensuing year for Houlton Public Schools have been made: Principal, Thos. P. Packard, Sub-master, Frank A. Nevers, Jr., Mrs. H. M. Briggs, Miss Gladys Brock and Miss Rachel Foster.

Famous heavyweight stops in Houlton — Joe Lewis, the Detroit “Brown Bomber” and world heavyweight champion, paid a visit to Houlton Monday night, according to information received from several sources. According to witnesses, Lewis was on his way to the Miramichi for a fishing trip when the long touring sedan stopped at the Complete Service Station on Bangor street for gasoline.
A Blaine barn raising — The old-fashioned neighborhood spirit was very much in evidence on Friday when fifty neighbors gathered to help in a barn raising on the farm of Paul Miller on the Griffith Road, Blaine. Mr. Miller’s barn was destroyed by lightning in the June 23 storm. At five o’clock a substantial supper was served on outdoor tables by the ladies of the S. S. S. Club of Blaine.

MPS open house in Island Falls — More than 700 residents from the area toured the new operations building of the Maine Public Service Company during Saturday’s open house. C. Hazen Stetson, company president, said the modern all electric building was another step in the planned expansion to provide better services.
Six-town SAD proposed — Asa Gordon, coordinator of the Maine School District Commission, will discuss the proposed school administrative district for the towns of Island Falls, Smyrna, Oakfield, Merrill, Dyer Brook and Crystal during a meeting Wednesday at the school gymnasium. Tentative plans include the closing of the present high schools in Oakfield and Island Falls, and construction of a new district high school, possibly in Dyer Brook.

Key Bank sponsors historical book — Key Bank of Northern Maine has announced its sponsorship of the first pictorial history of Aroostook County. Work on the book has already begun with any profits from the sale of the book going to the Friends of the Aroostook County Historical Center for use with the County’s sesquicentennial celebration.
The Arts – 1988-89 — Performers scheduled to appear at the Maine Center for the Arts in Orono during the 1988-89 season include: Rudolf Nureyev and Friends, An Evening of Comedy with Robert Klein, the musical “Evita,” The Canadian Brass, Flying Karamazov Brothers and Bob McGrath of Sesame Street with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra.
