Musical selections — The program for the Houlton Band Concert to be held Thursday, 8 p.m. July 31 includes the following selections: Cappa’s Seventh Regiment by E. Quinn; Descriptive Overture: The Fall of Jericho by J. B. Maillochand; La Belle Roumaine Waltz by J. Ivanovici; Arietta for Trombone: Call of the Deep by C. W. Bennett; the Musical Messenger March by E. L. Van Walker; Out on Guard: An American Military Meditation for Clarinet by Franz Meyer; Adriene, Song and Dance by Loosey and The Star Spangled Banner.

The rain, and a little hail, fell so fast that the storm drains could not take care of the unusual load. The miniature flood lasted only a short while.

Horse patrol — Two new saddle horses, “Buck” and “Gold,” arrived here from Iowa last week for use by the United States Custom Service officers, replacing the two horses which were used last winter. Except along the Mexican border, Houlton is the only border station where these animals are used by officers in patrolling their territory. It is also probable these horses will be harnessed for use on a pung.

Sherman Station news — The firemen and Community Club of Sherman Station are sponsoring a field day here this Saturday. General Chairman Arnold Hafford announced the program will feature a gymkhana, games, Little League baseball, a band concert and a baked bean supper. Working with Mr. Hafford are Othello Robinson, Montell Bragg, Carol Birmingham, Derald Glidden, Herman Lyons, Dale Hafford, Arthur Baker, Geraldine Elwell and Lyda Steen.
Panther sighting — A large cat, believed to be a member of the mountain lion family, is reportedly roaming the region around Houlton and is said to have killed a dog Sunday night. The cat, described by Alfred Carpenter of the West Ridge road of North Houlton, is about five feet long, two feet high, darkish brown in color with a long tail. Carpenter calls it a panther and his neighbors agree.

Rhoda in national news — Aroostook’s register of probate, who also happens to be one of the Shiretown’s leading ladies, is something of a national celebrity after being featured in the July 24 edition of  USA Today. Cecilia Rhoda, the County’s register of probate for the last 12 years, was one of two delegates to the Republican National Convention to be highlighted in the flagship of Gannett newspapers.
Danforth’s debutants — The Danforth Volunteer Fire Department will be presenting its annual Mister North Country pageant at the Wyman gymnasium Saturday at 7 p.m. Several young men, some not so young, will be appearing in formal gowns and swimsuits plus a dancing routine. “Bring your cameras and sense of humor,” said Chairman and Fire Chief Vernon Cropley Jr.
