The County Federal Credit Union recently donated $1,000 to the town of Houlton to assist with the cost of maintaining the public rest area. Taking part in the check presentation are front row, from left, Jon McLaughlin, executive director Southern Aroostook Development Corporation; James Matilla, loan officer Houlton County Federal Credit Union; Eugene Conlogue, town manager; Ken Hensler, president/CEO Houlton County Federal Credit Union; Kathy Smith, branch manager; and back row, Jane Torres, Houlton Chamber of Commerce executive director; Stacy Edgecomb, marketing coordinator and Lori Weston, economic and community development director.

The “Count on The County” Initiative is presenting awards to non-profit organizations in Aroostook County within its field of membership each month through the end of the year. This $1,000 award will help defray some of the costs to maintain the Center that welcomes more than 25,000 people and the Rest Area used by countless others each year.
Maine’s Department of Transportation announced plans to close the center and rest area in 2010. Houlton and the Southern Aroostook Development Corporation convinced the state to turn the facility and property over to the town.  Today, Maine’s Tourism Association staffs the Center but does not contribute to the maintenance of the center building or rest area. Maintenance costs fall to the town, the SADC, and the generosity of private donors.
The County Federal Credit Union presented the $1,000 check at the Tourist Information Center and Rest Area in Houlton on July 26.
The bank encourages individuals to take part in this initiative by nominating a deserving organization. Applications are available in all branch locations and on-line at www.countyfcu.org. Eligible submissions must be a 501(c) non-profit organization in good standing.
Each month, the Count on The County Selection Committee will select a non-profit organization from the list of submissions to receive the award. The County Federal Credit Union’s serves more than 16,400 members with its branches in Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Fairfield and Houlton.
