Island Falls hosts races

   ISLAND FALLS, Maine — Caribou’s PJ Gorneault was the overall winner of The County Open half-marathon held Aug. 10.

Gorneault ran the 13.1 mile course in a time of 1:09:37 and was closely followed by Caribou runner Spencer McElwain who finished with a time of 1:10:11. In third was Curtis Wheeler of Presque Isle, 1:14:19.
The first female to cross the finish line was Gabrielle Wheeler of Presque Isle with a time of 1:29:56, followed by Sarah Mulcahy, Barring Plantation, 1:31:53 and third, Lisa Kingsbury, Hampton, 1:37:15.
Age division winners were: Female under 19, Lauren Hodge, 1:38:39 and male, Tyler Strid, Caribou, 1:44:22; 20-29, female, Kate Nickerson, Houlton, 1:47:35 and male, Corey Park, Presque Isle, 1:19:13; 30-39, female, Kellie Miller, Washburn, 1:56:25 and male, Jason Reilly, Cumberland, R.I., 1:15:34; 40-49, female, Jill Dunnett, Woodstock, N.B./Ca., 1:53:57 and male, David Dorre, Enfield, 1:25:46; 50-59, female, Kimberley Wright, Mapleton, 1:42:52 and male, Kevin Cassidy, Brunswick, 1:27:37; 60-69, male, Dana Cole, Old Town, 1:50:39; 70 plus, male, John Tjepkema, Orono, 1:53:31; first female masters, Katherine Collins, Winterport, 1:41:48 and first male masters, Jeff Ashby, Presque Isle, 1:21:13.
Chris Rines, Houlton, and Larry Tonzi were the first relay team finishing with a time of  1:29:06, followed by Trevor Levesque, Presque Isle, and  Noah Rossignol, Mapleton, 1:33:23; third, Steven Desmond and Dan Randolph, Caribou,, 1:35:21; fourth,  Alfred Hanscom, Caribou and Richard Hoppe, Portage, Sherwin Williams team, 1:44:37; fifth, Brent Bailey, Doug Bailey, Rebecca Melesciuc and Mike Qualey, Houlton, 1:45:20; sixth,  Michael Carter, Machias; Nicole Hanscom,Caribou; Glen and Teresa Holyoke, Brewer, Team Bog Lake,1:53:45.
The previous Saturday, Thomas Beckum was the first male and Hodge the first female to cross the line of the 21st annual Island Falls Summerfest 5K Run/Walk.
Beckum ran the course in 17.26 and Hodge in 20.27.
Age division winners are: 14 and under, male, Caleb Streinz, 20.55 and female, Abigail Streinz, 25.34; 15-19, male, Nick Lunn, 18.48 and female, Hannah Streinz, 22.17; 20-29, male, Jake Feener, 19.30 and female, Katherine Nickerson, 23.42; 30-39, male, Peter Bates, 20.01 and female, Kristin Bickford, 30.15; 40-49, Jeff Ashby, 17.52 and female, Angela Ewings, 22.23; 50-59, male, Larry Hodge, 20.41; and 60-69, male, Larry Tonzi, 22.11.
Winning their age categories in the walking division were: 15-19, Alesia Long, 37.28; 20-29, male, Brandon Noyes, 37.20 and female, Monica Bates and twins Beckum and Bentley, 32.58; 30-39, Janet Vose, 32.39; 40-49, Sherry Long, 37.28; 50-59, Jeannie Schenk, 32.13; 60-69, male, Richard Lane, 32.08 and female, Maureen Burns, 41.70; and 70 and over, male, Philip Curry, 41.50 and female, Beverly Long, 46.55.
