Some new varsity coaches have been hired at a couple local schools for the upcoming fall season.
Presque Isle High School has a new golf coach and a new boys’ cross country coach.
Daren Hunter replaces Carl Flynn as the coach of the Wildcat golf team. Hunter served as Flynn’s assistant last year, when PI placed second in the PVC and earned a berth in the state championship. Hunter is also the assistant varsity softball coach and is employed by SAD 1 as the district’s network and website coordinator.
Justin Fereshetian is the XC coach on the boys’ side, replacing Marie Beckum. He brings a wealth of experience to a young Wildcat squad. As a competitor, Fereshetian qualified for the New England Championships while at Leavitt High School and then went on to the University of Maine at Presque Isle, where he competed in both NAIA and USCAA national meets as a four-year team member.
“Justin comes to the sport naturally,” according to SAD 1 Athletic Director Mark White, as he is the son of longtime Bates College cross country and track and field coach Al Fereshetian.
At Central Aroostook High School in Mars Hill, Ty Thurlow has been hired as the boys’ varsity soccer coach to take over for Dave Collins. Thurlow taught English and was the head coach at Lee Academy for four years prior to taking the Panther post. He will also teach English at CAHS.
“He is well organized and he knows the game of soccer,” said Ryan Guerrette, SAD 42 athletic director. “It’s always good to have a teacher as a coach as they seem to really be able to connect with the kids. I’ve been impressed with Ty so far.”
White also announced that Von Perry will be the new Nordic ski head coach at Presque Isle this winter. Perry was an assistant coach last season and brings 30 years of Nordic skiing experience to the team. He replaces Sarah Dominick.
