Dangerous intersection — For the second time in the past few years, the house of Frank Smith, at the corner of Ludlow Road and the North Road, was struck by an automobile. The crash demolished one side of the veranda, tore wallpaper inside the house, and moved the rear of the piazza away from the house, to say nothing of the scare it gave the occupants.
Irving Berlin music at the Temple — “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” the song which Irving Berlin wrote nearly thirty years ago and which has lived long enough in popular fancy to become a genuine American folk song, forms the theme of the Darryl F. Zanuck 20th Century Fox production which bears the song’s name. The film will be shown Wednesday and Thursday at the Temple Theatre with Tyrone Power, Alice Faye and Don Ameche in starring roles.

A wildlife exchange — The Maine Fish and Game Department’s regional biologist Francis Dunn of Patten is in charge of a program where several dozen Maine partridge (ruffed grouse) are being taken from Baxter State Park to be exchanged for caribou from Newfoundland. Baxter Park is also where the caribou are being released in hope of starting a self-perpetuating herd.
Patten Labor Day celebration — St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Patten, under the guidance of Rev. Armand T. Landry, is preparing one of the biggest Labor Day celebrations in the state. Eleanor Hunter, general chairman, says the parade will be one of the finest in the area with troops and equipment from Houlton National Guard Battery D, the Ann Whitley Schwartz Patriots Drum and Baton Corp, the Patten Sherman Band directed by Richard Burr, the Danforth Band directed by Vernon Pettigrew, the Patten Riding Club, as well as a judo exhibition by a team from Loring Air Force Base, a horse show, horse pull, auction, band concert and supper.
