The Northern Maine Regional Airport in Presque Isle and the Northern Aroostook Regional Airport in Frenchville are two of eight airports in the state slated to receive federal funding for improvements,

splitting nearly $5 million that will be used for various projects, from runway upgrades to construction of a terminal.
Sen. Susan Collins, ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, and Sen. Angus King, said in a joint statement that the eight airports were awarded federal grants, totaling more than $5.1 million, from the Federal Aviation Administration.
“Maine’s large geographic area makes air travel an important transportation option that connects towns and cities across the state,” said Sens. Collins and King in a joint statement. “Maine’s small airports play a vital role in supporting local businesses, especially in the state’s more rural regions. This funding will help make necessary improvements and maintain a safe operational environment at our airports.”
Rep. Mike Michaud, a longtime member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, praised the U.S. Department of Transportation’s approval of the funding.
“I’m pleased this funding has been approved. From airport terminals to runway enhancements, these projects represent a step forward not only for safety but also our economy,” said Rep. Michaud. “Investments in our airport infrastructure help ensure Maine communities stay connected and competitive.”
Among the recipients were two Aroostook airports:
• Northern Aroostook Regional Airport in Frenchville will receive $222,897 for the construction of a hangar building which will assist the airport to be as self-sustaining as possible by generating revenue. NARA will also receive $31,500 for rehabilitation of a runway needed to maintain structural integrity of the pavement and to minimize foreign object debris. This grant will provide funding for Runway 14/32 crack sealing.
• Northern Maine Regional Airport in Presque Isle will receive $216,000 for the removal of obstructions in Runway 01 approach and transitional surfaces. This grant will provide funding to install wind cones, which will enhance aircraft visual guidance and enhance safety of aircraft movements.
