Tailgate barbecue planned at Caribou-PI games

    The Caribou Athletic Boosters will have a tailgate barbecue at the soccer games today and tomorrow at Caribou High School.
    The Viking teams will be taking on Presque Isle each day, with the junior varsity games at 5 p.m. and the varsity games at 7 p.m. Hamburgers, hot dogs and other barbecue fare will be served for fans taking in the rivalry contests.

 

Night race scheduled Friday

    The annual Alumni/Community Cross Country race will be held Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:45 p.m. on the Caribou High School trails.
    Registration for the event begins at 6:30 p.m. The race, which will be held under the lights, is 2.75 miles in length and is for individuals of all ages.
    Categories include 50 years of age and older, eighth grade and younger, high school-age and elite. Individuals and teams can compete. Teams can have up to five people and need at least three to score points. They can be all-male, all-female or mixed.
    There is no entry fee. Runners start in various groups according to their age category and will go out in waves 60 seconds apart. Scoring will be tabulated by placement instead of time, and winners will receive alumni race T-shirts.

Running events slated in Caribou on Labor Day

    The annual Viking Run will be held on Labor Day, Sept. 2, beginning at 9 a.m. at Caribou High School. Registration gets under way at 8 a.m. at the CHS track.
    Trophies will be awarded to the top three boys and girls to finish each race. Categories are Pre-K/kindergarten quarter mile, grades 1-2 half mile, grades 3-4 half mile, grades 5-6 mile and grades 7-8 mile.
    Ribbons will be awarded to all participants and the first 150 to register will receive a T-shirt. For more information, contact Roy Alden at ralden@rsu39.org.
    The Caribou Labor Day Road Race is slated for that morning as well, with walkers setting off at 10:30 a.m. for the five-kilometer race and runners at 11 a.m. for the 8K. The race is the finale in the County Challenge Road Racing Series and begins and ends at the CHS track. Registration gets under way at 8:30 a.m. at the ski building. Limestone rec offers variety of swim lessons

    The fall swimming lessons session will be held beginning Sept. 9 at the Limestone Community School pool and registrations will be accepted through Sept. 3. The cost per class is $30 for residents and $50 for non-residents.
    Classes include parent-child aquatics for those 6 months to 3 years of age, pre-school aquatics for ages 4-5, learn to swim levels I-IV for ages 6 and older and adult beginner.

Caribou boys tie Owls in opener

    The Caribou Middle School boys’ soccer team used a Noah Frost penalty kick with four minutes to play in regulation to salvage a 2-2 tie against Madawaska last Tuesday, Aug. 20.
    The match was the Vikings’ first of the season. Austin Findlen scored Caribou’s other goal, while Bailey Griffeth, Nic Sleeper and Camden Huck stood out on defense.
    The Vikes dominated play, as evidenced by their 14-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Limestone rec travel soccer

    The Limestone Recreation Department’s travel soccer schedule for grades 5-6 has been announced.
    The first practice is set for Sept. 10. Practices will continue Tuesdays and Thursdays through Oct. 10.

Softball batting practice

    A slow pitch softball batting practice, for any interested senior 55 years of age and older, is being offered Saturdays at the baseball field behind Northstar Variety in New Sweden beginning at 9 a.m.
