Children learn about Pete the Cat

EASTON NEWS

by Hillary Hallett

Kindergarteners are “Rocking in Their School Shoes” with their new friend, Pete the Cat. They have been enjoying the book series created by James Dean. This series has wonderful themes about making the best of every situation and enjoying every minute of their school day! The students love reading the stories, singing his songs and doing creative projects in language arts and math.

If you do not know this series, please check it out. Our new math series is fantastic! The format is aligned with The Common Core and is chock full of hands-on, active learning with very well organized student pages that are easy for students to follow. The units even have a homework component for kindergarteners! The students are asked to complete a follow-up activity at home that will only take about two minutes for them to complete that ensures understanding of the day’s lesson. It sets the child and family up for future success with good homework habits taught early for lifelong learners! They are thrilled to show Mom and Dad what they can do all by themselves!
I hope the excitement they have now for learning lasts forever! We are also working on language arts with our friends from The Land of the Letter People. We average one letter person a week and students are asked to bring in one small item from home that begins with the sound of the week for display in class. Again, this is an attempt at bridging the home-school connection of their learning. We are the village that raises the child.
Looking forward to a fabulous year!

Early Childhood Program

The Early Childhood Program has also been working with Pete the Cat. They love the songs and stories and their excitement is contagious! They created puppets of Pete to share at home as they tell parents all about their day at school. We have met Mr. N from Letter People Land and are working on name writing, following directions, proper pencil/crayon grasp and classroom routines.
They are a delightful group of students that are settling in very quickly to their new surroundings. The bus ride to school is always a highlight as they set off on their own for the first time in their little lives. They are showing so much growth in independence already! What promise the future holds for them! We have been learning many safety rules for the bus, playground and classroom. We celebrated our new environment with water balloon fun on the playground.

Easton Sesquicentennial

The Easton Sesquicentennial Planning Committee needs your help. The committee would love to have stories, photographs and history of the town for a publication they are in the process of compiling. All materials can be turned in to the Town Office starting immediately. The committee is also looking for activities suggestions and volunteers.  If you are interested in being involved please e-mail info@eastonme.com.
