Cary Library has successful summer reading program

This year the Cary Library children’s summer reading program was “Dig Into Reading.” The teen summer reading program was “Beneath The Surface.” Both were very popular programs, with 137 children and 20 teens signing up.

Weekly activities included children making bulldozers and dump trucks out of paper fasteners and construction paper, and the famous edible dish of dirt. They also went to Chadwick’s Florist and with instructions from Amanda and staff, planted a plant using a recycled two liter soda bottle. Brittany Benn also came to the library and gave the children a chance to see her worm farming hobby.

BS-caryukees-dc-pt-37THEY’RE COMING — A new music group called the Houlton Cary Ukees is being formed and will meet twice a month on Thursday at the Cary Library from 6-8 p.m., starting Thursday, Sept. 12. The Houlton Cary Ukees is a fun new music experience for all ages and abilities. The group’s goal is to create a fun atmosphere for those just learning as well as those who have played for years. At the organizational meeting are, from left, Tim Humphrey of Northern Maine Musical, who can supply ukuleles at a discount price for group members; Rev. Dale Holden, Mellissa Fuller and Rev. Marc Fuller. For more information, call 532-0670.

For the 2013 summer reading program, the library continued the practice of providing a nutritional snack to each child for reading a book. As each child reached their halfway goal they received a Pizza Hut certificate. Everyone reaching their goal received a certificate of completion, another Pizza Hut certificate, a McDonald’s coupon and each participant chose two books for their personal collection at the final party.
All of the readers did an outstanding job reading! Two thousand one hundred ninety five books were read during the five-week summer program. The commitment by these readers and the support of their families is to be commended and the library staff applauds them!
Cary Library would like to extend their thanks to the many sponsors who helped make this program successful.
“Dannette Ellis from Aid for Children Foundation provided books, Chris Carmichael, from Pizza Hut continued to provide for our program with his generous donation of Personal Pan Pizza coupons, and Heidi Abbotoni, from McDonald’s donated French fry cards for all the children,” said Linda Faucher, Cary Librarian. “Special thanks to Paula Dahlk for providing another creative piñata for a grand prize.”
The library would also like to recognize and thank all the staff, devoted volunteers Hannah, Nikki, Peggy, Audrey and Isabel, the presenters and all the donors that helped make this summer’s program a huge success.
