Former Caribou Historical Society president Phil Turner, center, and current president Bud Brewer, right, led the crowd that gathered at the historical society’s center and museum on Saturday for the dedication ceremony of the barn and nature trail located on the society’s grounds on U.S. Route 1 in Caribou.
Despite the threat of rain, a relatively large group of people turned out for the outdoor event, which also featured a hot dog roast and music by the band The Good Ol’ Boys.
“I’m happy with the turnout,” said historical society president Bud Brewer. “It’s a good group of people.”
Former historical society president Phil Turner, who was instrumental in acquiring and researching a great deal of the objects displayed at the museum throughout the years, was given the honor of unveiling the plaque located inside of the barn which honors the many donors responsible for its construction.
“I am happy to be here today. I enjoyed my work with the society throughout the years, and none of this would be possible without you, the public,” Turner told the crowd.
Harriet Cousins’ son, Lewis, cut the ribbon at the entrance of the trail named after his late mother, another active member of the society throughout the years.
“She would be very honored and thankful,” Lewis said. “We appreciate the hard work that went into the trail.”
The Caribou Historical Society Center and Museum is located on U.S. Route 1 in Caribou and is open on Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. Anyone interested in becoming a member may contact the society at 498-2556.
