ISLAND FALLS — An early morning crash Monday sent three people to the hospital when a recreational vehicle drove through the barricade of the Island Falls off ramp.

According to Maine State Police Sgt. Brian Harris, at about 2:30 a.m., an RV driven by Edward Smith, 62, of Chester, Nova Scotia, turned off Interstate 95 at the Island Falls detour and failed to negotiate the turn, careening through the guard rail and down the embankment.

NE-Crash-dcx-pt-37CRASH — An RV carrying three people crashed through a guard rail in Island Falls Monday. All three were hospitalized.

Smith and his two passengers — David Pierce, 64, and Stephen Daubs, 68, both of Nova Scotia — were trapped inside the vehicle. The Houlton Fire Department responded to the crash to free the people from the vehicle.
“Smith did not slow down or stop at the Route 2 intersection and continued through the guardrail and down a steep embankment coming to rest in the woods,” Harris said.
The RV was totaled in the crash. All three sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to Houlton Regional Hospital for treatment. They were listed in stable condition, according to hospital officials.
Troopers Jared Sylvia and Sgt. Josh Haines investigated the crash.
