Despite the rainy weather, local high school boys soccer teams did get in a few games last week. The defending state Class C Houlton Shires and Southern Aroostook Warriors each split with their opponents, while the Katahdin Cougars and East Grand Vikings are still looking for their first win.
Houlton 3, Schenck 0 — At East Millinocket last Tuesday, the Shiretowners blanked the Wolverines.
Jacob Worthley gave the Shires a 1-0 lead in the first half en route to the win, with Isaac Cone and Gage Hunt each scoring a goal. Goalie Kole Buzzeo had two saves on three shots for the Shires.
For 1-1 Schenck, Joe Chaisson finished with 20 saves on 25 shots.
Houlton 0, Fort Kent 2 — Last Friday in Fort Kent, the Shires couldn’t crack the net against the Warriors, as Cody Plourde blocked only four of seven shots faced.
Providing the scoring for Fort Kent were Abraham Desjardins, who scored a goal in the first half on an assist from goalie Plourde, and a second goal from Nathan Michaud off a pass from Tito Naranja, also in the first half.
The Warriors are 5-1-1, while the Shires slip to 1-2-1.
Houlton goalie Buzzeo stopped four of 13 shots faced.
SACS 0, Ashland 3 — Last Wednesday the Hornets stung the visiting Southern Aroostook Warriors in a game under the lights.
Both teams were held scoreless by their respective goalies in the first half, but Ashland broke free in the second half of action with Cody Blair racking up three goals for a hat trick, with assists from Mark Chasse and Adam Sessoms.
Ashland netkeeper Tim Tarr made seven saves, while SACS goalie Austin White turned back 10 shots.
Ashland improved to 2-2-2, with SACS evening their season record with that game to 2-2.
Woodland 0, SACS 7 — It was no contest last Saturday afternoon in Dyer Brook, as the Warriors rolled by Woodland behind Parker Walker’s hat trick and assist, with single tallies scored by Cameron Landry, Jackson Mathers, Cody Lassonde and Matt Tarr. Mathers and Lassonde each had assists in the game.
Will Brooks and Chris Tharton combined to make 17 saves for 0-2-0 Woodland and White had four saves for the 3-2 Warriors.
Katahdin 0, Schenck 4 — The Cougars (0-3) couldn’t find any offense in East Millinocket last Friday. Goalie Todd Young blocked 21 of 29 shots faced, as the Wolverines’ Brandon Danforth racked up three goals and Justin Thompson added another. Schenck goalie Joe Chaisson had 12 saves on 17 shots faced.
Penobscot Valley 3, Katahdin 1 — Last Tuesday at home, the Penobscot Valley Howlers received scoring from Thomas Spencer, Bryce Martin and Sam Millet, with Grant Doane adding two assists, to overtake Katahdin.
East Grand 0, Hodgdon 4 — Last Tuesday, the host Hawks shut out East Grand behind three goals by Jimmy Buzzell and an assist, with Chris Hudson scoring a tally and Deyrell Vargas finishing with an assist.
Hodgdon had 14 saves and East Grand had 10 saves on 14 shots.
Wisdom 9, East Grand 0 — At Danforth last Friday, the Vikings (0-3) were held scoreless against a 6-1 Pioneer team. Evan Escancy had five goals for Wisdom.
East Grand 1, Wisdom 11 — The Vikings met the Pioneers for a second match on Monday in St. Agatha. The outcome still was the same, with East Grand falling to their opponent.
Esancy again led the way, scoring five goals, while Shane Chamberland tacked on a goal and three assists for the Pioneers. Justin Pelletier bumped in two more goals, with single tallies from Shawn Bouley, Kevin Chamberland and Brandon Barriere. Daniel Columbe had an assist for 7-1 Wisdom.
Alex Stoddard scored the lone goal for the 0-4 Vikings.
Wisdom goalie Chance Gervais collected 10 saves as did East Grand goalie Thomas Gilman.
CAHS 3, Hodgdon 1 — The Hawks fell behind in Monday’s game at home and couldn’t recover. The Panthers Austin Caverhill and Dustin Pryor each scored a first-half goal, with Logan Grass breaking the plane for a goal in the second half.
Chris Hudson scored the lone goal for Hodgdon. Keeper Blake Woods stopped 21 of 24 shots, while CAHS goalie Spencer Garrison made 15 saves against 16 shots.
