To the editor:
A word of thanks to everyone who fought to have the Houlton office of the Maine Revenue Service reopened. The people who made trips to Augusta deserve special recognition, but everyone who did their share, including those who signed the petitions, deserve our gratitude. We may have lost this round, but, according to the Houlton Pioneer Times
front-page article of Sept. 4, there is hope that this is not yet over. Perhaps the powers that be in Augusta will realize what we all learned in school – that eliminating jobs that bring in more revenue than the corresponding expenses incurred, is not good economics. Hopefully, good old-fashioned common sense will prevail.
No matter the outcome, this is a prime example of the good citizenship so often exhibited by the people of Houlton. We understand that when one of us suffers a setback, we need to pull together and help however we can. We should all be both thankful and proud to live in such a caring community. I know I am.
