Thomas LaJoie, a sophomore at Van Buren District High School and the son of Rachel and Dominic LaJoie, was the recipient of the Gwen Turner Memorial Scholarship at the Aroostook Teen Leadership Camp. The scholarship is given annually in memory of Turner, a Mapleton native who supervised food services at the camp for over 20 years. The recipient must exhibit a high level of dedication, outstanding school citizenship and high moral character. The scholarship is funded annual by Turner’s sons-in-law. The family of Gwen Turner attended the recent presentation and from left are Turner’s daughters, Mary Michaud, Julie Perkins and Annette Roope; LaJoie, daughter Nancy Saucier, son-in-law Ervin Perkins and daughter Carol Soucy, who now serves as ATLC’s food service director. Absent when photo was taken were Turner’s other daughters, Marcia Hartt and Alice McQuade.
