PRESQUE ISLE — Several local businesses have something to cheer about, following word from the Presque Isle Police Department
that all stores involved in recent alcohol compliance checks passed with flying colors.
An entry on the PIPD’s Facebook page noted the department “regularly conducts undercover alcohol compliance checks.”
“These checks are intended to ensure employees of stores who sell alcohol do not sell alcohol to minors,” read a statement posted on the department’s page.
Officers conducted the operation on the evening of Sept. 12, with volunteers recruited to attempt to purchase alcohol from 20 stores in Presque Isle. Not a single store sold alcohol to the minors who attempted to make purchases.
“This is great news for the kids and families in this community and also speaks volumes for our local merchants and the efforts they have made to comply with the law. Great job, everyone!” noted the Facebook post.
Deputy Chief Laurie Kelly said this is not the first time all stores tested have passed but said it’s good news nonetheless.
“We randomly perform these tests. It depends — could be a couple to several times a year,” said Kelly.
She said underage volunteers assist the department with the random checks.
“We use different underage buyers and usually conduct the checks ourselves,” said Kelly. “This detail was done in conjunction with the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office.”
