SHERMAN — The second annual open house/fundraiser for the Upper Valley Economic Corporation Food Pantry will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 91 Island Falls Road in Sherman.
Allicca Torres-Quirion, a volunteer for the food pantry, is hosting the open house to benefit both the food pantry and the Salvation Army.
“Last year, my first open house collected 45 boxes of cereal and $200 for the food pantry,” Torres-Quirion said.
The UVEC food pantry is located in the Sherman Municipal Building and is open once a month to provide emergency food assistance for individuals and families that require help meeting the nutritional needs of their household. Application forms are available at the pantry, as well as the Staceyville and Sherman town offices.
Torres-Quirion is also the new Salvation Army service unit person that writes emergency vouchers for 14 towns and will have a kettle at the open house.
“The Salvation Army has only $1,800 for these towns for me to help others with, and clearly that is not enough,” she said. “So I am fundraising creatively through this event.”
Toilet tissue and peanut butter are two main items being collected. Thus far, Torres-Quirion has collected 48 rolls of paper and $20 in cash.
“I am expecting for it to grow each year, as other businesses want to help and donate their services to a cause that has instant results. Plus, they get to enjoy fall fun refreshments and be appreciated for their time and donations.”
In addition, Spoiled on the Go massage therapists will offer 20 minute massages for $20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; photographer Cindy Pottle will do photo sessions; Spoiled Hair Salon will offer hair extensions for $10; and fall crafts and decorating items are available through Pine Ridge Scents and Sign Company.
Free apple crisp and ice cream will be offered.
