Wow! What a glorious four days! O.P. Pierson Days in Caribou could not have gone better or had better weather. Thursdays on Sweden concluded for the summer with another well-attended gathering. It was great that the Pierson family and descendants of O.P. could come and cut his birthday cake. And Saturday was awesome!
On a perfect sunshiny day with the autumn leaves blazing and temperatures kissing 70, the downtown mall was transformed into an amazing collection of antique cars, tractors, motorcycles and Caribou’s old firetruck. Nearly every parking spot was full of the wonderful old vehicles as they came from all over. The Wednesday Night Fiddlers performed and there was a great barbecue by “Guns and Hoses,” the team of police and fire personnel manning their cooking stations.
At the same time as that event, Cary Medical Center had a successful health fair at the high school, a location that also saw a full slate of soccer games augmented by great food from the boosters.
Then, after the soccer games concluded, the very popular local band, Common Crossing, entertained in the back of the high school parking lot, doughboys were available and the concession stand was open. A large crowd gathered and the band played their hearts out until the fireworks went off.
Judging from the oohs and ahs from the crowd and the applause at the end, no one was disappointed with the quality fireworks show. Many props go to Chief Scott Susi who worked all day with the state fire marshal to satisfy all that official’s concerns to allow the show to go forward.
From a day that started at 6 in the morning with a potato pancake breakfast at the Assembly of God church to 9 in the evening when the fireworks concluded, it was just one amazing day. Well done, Caribou! Well done.
And yes, I said four days. Sunday was the conclusion of the two-week “Cari-Lime” tournament where golfers from Caribou Country Club competed against those from the Limestone Country Club for bragging rights and pizza. The Limestone Country Club hosted on Sunday after the first half was completed at CCC two weeks ago. I haven’t heard who won. All I know is that despite the weather being perfect, I did not play that well. I hope others did much better.
I think I will leave this week’s column right there and bask in the afterglow of a fun summer and fall. Many folks have shared how much they enjoyed and were encouraged by the great fun we had all summer. Thanks to all the hard work by employees of the city of Caribou, the vendors that came out each event, the musical acts that played and for all of you who came and made the events so special.
There is a new feeling in Caribou and this area is coming back together. Special things are going to happen here.
