Mr. and Mrs. Martin Pankratz have returned to their home in Manhattan, Kansas, after spending the (so-called) summer months at their cottage here on Pleasant Pond. They have been summer resident for some 40 years and have made many friends, who always look forward to their return in the spring. Their son Gary arrived from Texas a few days before their departure and helped winterize the cottage.

Richard Cook and companion, Aline, from Ellsworth, spent a few days with Clayton and Charlene Webb. While here, they enjoyed different trips to surrounding towns. One of the trips was to Sherman, where they shopped at the Upper Room. They have since returned home to Ellsworth, enjoying the fall foliage on their return trip.
The bed of sunflowers that grew under my bird feeder is now ready to be cut down, as the flowers are really drooping now. And despite the cool weather we have had, my lawn could really stand another mowing. I have my few chickadees still around and the fat little woodchuck is still hiding under my front steps. This fall I plan to buy some new bird feeders that are squirrel proof. My older feeders have been really chewed up by the pesky rodents so will try something new. I haven’t seen any of the red or gray squirrels yet but it wont be long now and I hope the new feeders will keep them at bay.
I still have the doe deer and her twins around busily eating the apples under the tree and also grazing in my back lawn. I haven’t seen the big buck for a few days, but he may come out when it is too dark for us to see.
