Events planned for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Advocacy Program will hold several events in October in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

According to Jane Root, director for the HBMI Domestic Violence program, the awareness campaign serves individuals impacted by domestic and sexual violence, dating violence and stalking. Services include unconditional, confidential support, emergency shelter, transitional housing, safety planning, a 24-hour hotline, support groups, court advocacy and accompaniment services as well as prevention education and training.
During the month of October the Maliseet Domestic & Sexual Violence Advocacy Center will be hosting events and reaching out to the community to raise awareness about a subject that touches many of our lives on a very personal level.
On Oct. 9, the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Maliseet Domestic and Sexual Violence Advocacy Center will be held from 6-8pm at the Maliseet Gymnasium. There will be a light sit down dinner, drumming, and candle lighting ceremony. All are welcomed!
“Please join us and help us celebrate 15 years of providing a safety net for victims/survivors of domestic and sexual violence,” Root said.
Throughout the month, community members and businesses are asked to shine a purple light in the their office and living room window throughout the month of October to indicate that they are a violence free safe place.
Supporters can also wear a purple feather pin with the words “honor, respect, protect” imprinted are available at all HBMI offices and the Houlton Outreach Center.
