GARLAND, Fernald P., 93, CHAPMAN, September 29, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 5, at the United Methodist Church, Presque Isle. Arrangements are in the care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle.
CHAPMAN – Fernald P. Garland, 93, of E. Chapman, ME, died on September 29, 2013, at home, surrounded by family.
He was predeceased by his wife, Hazel A. (Sloat) Garland with whom he shared 71 years of marriage and a love that continues through their seven children: Pamela G. Loft of Windham, Wanda R. Garland of Waldoboro, Janice G. Wood of Waldoboro, Fernald Timothy Garland of Bangor, Cheryl A. Crabtree of Argyle, Nita Garland of Gainesville, FL, and Francine J.G. Stark of Winterport; 15 grandchildren: Brent, Daniel and Shane Harper; Jonathan, Benjamin and Jeremiah Loft; Leslie, Laurie, Doug and Timothy Wood; Adam and Tara Garland; Steven and Barbara Crabtree; and Hazel Z. Stark; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Born June 29, 1920, in Presque Isle, the son of Ruth E. (Higgins) Garland and Floyd E. Garland, Fernald was predeceased by his brothers, F. Woodford “Woody” Garland and Roland Garland.
A veteran of WWII, in which he proudly served in the US Navy, Fernald dedicated his life to being a good man as husband, father, farmer, shepherd, friend, mentor, carpenter and woodsman. He encouraged many young people through leading 4-H Dairy and Sheep Clubs in the 1950s and 60s. He was a lifelong member of the Grant Memorial United Methodist Church. Hazel and Fernald were members and leaders of the Spud Shufflers Square Dance Club and danced together beautifully for 30 years. He loved to tell stories, especially those that would make people laugh. Fernald was a mighty man with many skills. He could build a tractor from scrap parts, drop a tree in the woods exactly where he wanted it to fall, and create a finely crafted piece of art from wood.
Fernald and Hazel together planted over three million trees in Aroostook County In their many trips on the Allagash Waterway, Hazel and Fernald were unbeatable in their 21 foot White Canoe. As their children struggled to keep up with Hazel paddling in the bow and Fernald’s efficient paddle strokes and navigation from the stern, they would glide across the big lakes, filled with joy and appreciation for the woods, water and wildlife and the opportunity each day to live and love. Fernald’s memories of those trips on the Allagash were the treasured images that sustained him through the last years of his life.

Friends may call on the family at the Church on Friday, October 4, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m., where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 5, at the United Methodist Church, Presque Isle, with a reception following at the church.
