One of PI’s special citizens
To the editor:
I am writing this to express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Richard Graves, for his random act of kindness.
Several years ago, my partner, Philip Parker, (he goes by Parker) went for an eye exam with Dr. Graves. It was a nice appointment. They got to talking and Parker spoke of his Uncle Henry Allen, a famous trumpet player who played with Louis Armstrong and Kid Ory. Henry “Red” Allen dominated the jazz scene on the East Coast.
One would think that would be the end of it. Well Parker went back six years later for another eye exam. Now here is the random act of kindness that so blessed us. Parker has no family pictures or mementos from his life in New York where he grew up. Dr. Graves at sometime during those six years between Parker’s visits, found an album of Henry Allen. On the album is a great picture of Parker’s Uncle Henry Allen. Also on the album is the story of Henry Allen’s career.
What a wonderful thing for Parker to have. Dr. Graves remembered Parker and asked Parker if he could come back after lunch as Dr. Graves had something for him.
It seems that Dr. Graves got the album at a yard sale. Parker went back and Dr. Graves gave him the album. What a blessing.
The album is in great shape. We can’t wait to hear it. What a miracle for Parker, he now has a treasure from his family and history. All because of a random act of kindness from a kind and caring man.
We know there are a great many people who know how nice Dr. Graves is. He has been a treasure to this community for many years. Dr. Graves has also kept this community’s history for us and has given many years of services to our community.
Dr. Graves, Parker and I thank you for the kindness very much. It will be remembered always. You are in our prayers.
