College chapel dedication in Van Buren — The handsome new $15,000 chapel and refectory at St. Mary’s College, Van Buren, completed a few days ago was blessed and dedicated with a solemn high mass Tuesday morning. The very Rev. Matthew F. Thouvenin S. M., president of the college, officiated at both ceremonies.

Aroostook statehood discussed — The regular meeting of the Caribou Chamber of Commerce held Tuesday at the Matoaka Club considered a number of important business matters and afforded an interesting and progressive meeting. In addition to reports by the Christmas committees and discussion of the question of closing local stores at 5 p.m., P. J. Sullivan gave a report on the investigation his committee had made regarding the feasibility of Aroostook becoming a state.
Of local interest — Miss Ilelle Ayoob of Fort Fairfield attended a house warming given for Mrs. Joseph Sleeper on Thursday. Wilfred Martin and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Sophia St. Peter, have leased the Ryder Filling Station on South Main Street. Parkin Briggs, Richard Gardner, Perley Merrithew and Reginald Roderick represented the Caribou Fish and Game Club at the hearing before the Fish and Game Commissioner at Eagle Lake on Friday.

Curling club for Caribou — Brooms and bonspiels. Tees and hacks. Wicks and head houses. Draws and knockouts. Rocks and ends. Terms unfamiliar to the sports fraternity of Aroostook? Before too long they may become household words in the area. The purpose of a meeting held Tuesday morning at Hotel Caribou was the organization of the Caribou Curling Club, carried out under the initial presidency of Alfred McLean.
Caribou Junior High class officers — Class elections have been held at Caribou Junior High School according to Principal Freeman Brewer. Rodney Dubois was elected president of the eighth grade; Danny Porter, vice president; Marsha Furlong, secretary; and Brent Gagnon, treasurer. Michael Thurston was elected president of the seventh grade; Jeffrey Dow, vice president; Bonnie Beveridge, secretary; and Larry Adams, treasurer.

All-time low unemployment — The Aroostook County unemployment rate for September was the lowest ever recorded since state labor officials began compiling statistics in 1975, officials said. Alan J. Cox, manager of labor market information for Aroostook and Washington counties, attributed the county’s 3.5 percent unemployment rate to “the general labor shortage being experienced statewide,” and also the annual seasonal harvest.
Caribou traffic flow — The Maine Department of Transportation is planning to widen and improve the east end of Bennett Drive in Caribou at the intersection of Routes 1 and 89 and install a traffic signal at the intersection.
