Group donates more than 100 hand-made quilts

    The Washburn A Stitchin’ an a Givin’ quilting group celebrated Make a Difference Day on Saturday, Oct. 26.

    The Stitchin’ and a Givin’ group in Washburn recently donated over 100 hand-made quilts to those in need.     The group made 152 quilts to donate, with 129 of the quilts donated to Hospice of Aroostook as memory quilts. The memory quilts are 100 percent cotton for kids and can be written on by family and loved ones so they can add their own personal messages. 
    The other 23 quilts are comfort quilts will go to people who are suffering from disease or distress. The group makes quilts throughout the year for Hospice, organizations to raffle, and for people that need a little comfort and care. 
    A Stitchin’ and a Givin’ members are always looking for donations of new fabric, thread, crochet cotton or money to keep this inspirational service going. If you would like to make a donation of any kind or if you are interested in joining the group, please call Rhonda Sperrey at 554-9459.

Historical Society

    The Salmon Brook Historical Society will hold its final meeting of the calendar year on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Civic Center. This meeting will include a potluck meal. Bring a casserole, dessert or salad and your place settings. Everyone is welcome.

PTO meeting

    The first Parent Teacher Organization meeting for Washburn District Elementary School will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m. in the elementary school cafeteria. Anyone with children in the Washburn Elementary School is welcome to attend.

Washburn Rotary

    The speaker at the Oct. 23 meeting of the Washburn Rotary Club was Michael Sonntag, vice president for academic affairs at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. He and student Mindy Hitchcock brought club members up-to-date as to the outdated condition of UMPI’s science labs and classrooms. He spoke of the upcoming election and how the passage of Question 2 would help fund upgrades to some of the UMPI facilities, especially those related to the field of science.
