Remembering those who served

VET-Plummer-AR-45   Merle Plummer was born on August 21, 1931 in Presque Isle, where he grew up and went to the Cunningham School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug. 7, 1952 and served as a mechanic while he was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. While serving in the Army, Plummer earned the rank of corporal and was honorably discharged on July 10, 1954.

Awards Plummer received include the Army Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his discharge from the Army, Plummer worked for Verizon for 35 years in Aroostook County as a heavy equipment mechanic and spent many late nights repairing vehicles so the crews could be back on the road in the morning.
In 1957 Merle married his wife, Joyce, and they lived in Presque Isle, where they raised three children, Todd, Beth and Jo Ellen. Merle could often be found riding around the County in his jeep listening to music and hunting and fishing. He enjoyed traveling all over to try new restaurants. He also took part in Bike Week in Laconia, NH for several years.
Plummer was all about family and he valued the time he spent with them. He was an expert moose caller and passed the skill along to his children.
Plummer moved to Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou in March 2012. He enjoys listening to music and taking part in activities the home offers on a regular basis. He also enjoys his regular visits from Joyce and other family members.
    Thank you for your service!
