PRESQUE ISLE & FORT FAIRFIELD – Doris M. Bernard, 100, passed away Saturday afternoon, October 26, 2013, at a Presque Isle healthcare facility, following a brief illness. She was born September 14, 1913, in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Joseph P. and Sophia (Lavoie) Bernard.
She was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School Class of 1932 and had been employed by the Augusta State Hospital for ten years. Doris relocated to Fort Fairfield where she worked for her sister-in-law, Sylvia at Sylvia’s Smart Hat Shoppe for thirty-two years, and later was employed at McCain Foods, Easton until her retirement. Doris was truly the Boston Red Sox’s biggest fan. She never missed a game, and the Sox truly have a guardian angel watching over them!
Doris was a lifelong communicant of the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, Fort Fairfield, and had been a resident of Leisure Gardens, Presque Isle for the past seven years.
In addition to her parents, Doris was predeceased by five brothers, infant Clarence Bernard, Wilfred J. Bernard, Rufus A. Bernard, Louis F. Bernard and Albert J. Bernard; two sisters, Louise M. Bernard and Hazel A. Bernard; and one niece, Barbara Adams. She is survived by thirteen nieces and nephews and their spouses, Jean and Rich Brisson, Elaine and Ronald Cummings, all of the Villages, Florida, Catherine Bernard and Rick Thompson of Fort Fairfield, Brenda and Nason Reid of Portsmouth, NH, Roger and Marcella Bernard, David and Adrienne Bernard, all of Fort Fairfield, Linda and Robert Romano of Phoenix, AZ, Donna and Alfred Greenlaw of Bangor, Bonnie Cunningham and companion, Tim Wing of Augusta, Anne and Brian Blanchard of Fort Fairfield, Marcia and Robert Kennedy of Buxton, Susan Bernard and Karl Kornchuk of Caribou, Jane and Paul Towle of Presque Isle; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and wonderful friends, too numerous to list.
Friends called Tuesday, October 29, 2013, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 14 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A mass of Christian burial was be celebrated Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main Street, Fort Fairfield with Father Emile Dube celebrant. Interment followed at the St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments was held after the interment service at the V.F.W. Paul Lockhart Post Number 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield.
