Liking your job — From an editorial titled, “Liking Your Job:” A clever college graduate who is “making good” in a position, says that while in college the boys used to say the difference between a job and a position was a job paid $25 a week and the position but $10. There are men who take high positions because of the honor or the opportunity to make money connected with them, and think little about the work as a most satisfactory thing to do.
Of local interest — Those having pianos that need tuning may notify Mr. Basford, in care of the Houlton Music Store this week. Contractor Chas. Swett is breaking ground on Maple street preparatory to building a house, which no doubt will find a ready market. Sold through the Northern Maine Real Estate Agency, C. O. Grant, Mgr., The Estabrook store at Smyrna Mills to C. B. Noyes and L. A. Leavitt of Smyrna Mills.

Theft of drugs — Thieves ransacked the car of Dr. George Ebbett Wednesday as it was parked in front of his office in the Green Block, taking his two bags of instruments. Apparently, all the thieves were interested in were a few tablets of morphine, for when one of the bags was found later, only the drug had been taken.
Of local interest — Miss Mary Fitzpatrick, student nurse at the Madigan Hospital School of Nursing, is recovering from an appendectomy. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dunphy have moved from Lewis Bither’s house on Military street to the house recently built by Max Etscovitz on Commonwealth Ave. Frank Gorham Jr. has accepted employment with the Houlton Water Company as meter reader. C. Henry Rideout observed his 87th birthday on Saturday and on that day walked from his home on Court Street to Market Square and back, a distance of over two miles.

Margaret Chase Smith in the news — The Houlton Pioneer Times’ editorial in today’s newspaper notes, “There have been few presidential elections in the past several years in which the name of Margaret Chase Smith has not been prominently mentioned as a potential vice presidential candidate. Mrs. Smith…is reportedly going to enter her name in some of the presidential primaries to test her strength. We can only wish the Lady From Maine the very best in her most recent endeavor.”

FHA OFFICERS — Alice Sawyer, seated center, has been chosen president of the Future Homemakers of Houlton High School. In the military — Three area youth are among the 11 from Aroostook County who have joined the U. S. Navy through enlistment. They are Laurence Albright, son of Ralph Albright of Houlton; Reginald Wayne Davenport, son of Mrs. Flossie Davenport of Mars Hill; and Gary Scott of Bridgewater. Albright chose aviation prior to enlisting, while Davenport and Scott chose general seamanship.

Aroostook truck donated to Bangor museum — The family of Vernon and Olive McBride has donated a 1941 GMC farm truck to the Bangor Transportation Museum being developed by Coles Express. In its original condition, it will be the only working potato truck representing Aroostook County. Used on the McBride homestead on the Framingham Road in Littleton, the vehicle was donated by grandson, Mark Hovey in honor of the McBride family.
Border Patrol activities for October — During October, Border Patrol agents assigned to the Houlton sector apprehended 79 persons. Twenty-two of the persons arrested had criminal records. Three vehicles were seized by Houlton agents for violations of 8 USC1324, bringing in and harboring certain aliens.
