8th-grade boys begin with victory
The Caribou Middle School eighth-grade boys’ basketball team kicked off its season in style Thursday, besting Fort Fairfield, 70-37.
The Vikes’ full-court press led to an early 22-2 lead and the team cruised from there. Matt Nadeau scored 22 points, Nick Allen had 14 and Brandon Manter 10 for the winners. Seth Beidelman added eight and Dawson Hebert and Evan Desmond tossed in six each. Bailey Griffeth dished out numerous assists and Caleb Trombley also had a strong outing for coach Steve Perreault’s squad.
Turkey Trot road race scheduled Nov. 30 at CHS
The 28th Caribou Turkey Trot will go off at 10 a.m. at Caribou High School on Saturday, Nov. 30.
Registration gets under way at 8:30 a.m. and walkers will begin at 9:45 a.m. Registration will take place in the gym lobby at Caribou High School. The race fee is $13 with $1 going towards a 50/50 raffle that will be done upon the conclusion of the race.
This year’s race proceeds will benefit Caribou High School athletics and youth running in the local communities.
The race will feature the same course as in the past, heading out on the Woodland Center Road from the high school then out and back on the Lombard Road. The traditional turkey awards will be given to the top age group award winners in the following categories: under 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and over, as well as the overall male and female.
The post-race meal will be the delicious traditional turkey-topped pizza. Families are strongly encouraged to attend this year’s race.
“We hope to see a great turnout this year and really look to emphasize the concept of fitness and the health benefits that come along with it. The 5K is a great distance that even middle school-aged children can enjoy and run,” said race director Evan Graves.

Hoop season begins with UMPI tournament
The University of Maine at Presque Isle will open its basketball season this weekend by hosting the Star City Classic at Wieden Gymnasium.
The Owl men are coached by Jim Casciano, who is beginning his third season at Presque Isle. The team had an 11-14 record during the 2012-13 campaign.
Doug Carter takes over for Marc Heidorn as the UMPI women’s coach. Under Heidorn, the Lady Owls recorded an 8-17 mark a season ago.
The men’s tournament has just three teams playing round-robin style. The host Owls play UM-Machias Friday at 6 p.m. The Clippers will take on UM-Fort Kent Saturday at 4 p.m. and UMPI and UMFK square off Sunday at 4 p.m.
Four teams are competing in the women’s tourney. On Saturday at 6 p.m,, UM-Fort Kent and Thomas College take to the court, followed at 8 p.m. by the Owls against Newbury College of Brookline, Mass.
In Sunday’s matchups, Newbury and UMFK tip off at noon, with UMPI and Thomas playing at 2 p.m.
Youth ski rentals available in Caribou
The Northern Skiers Club and the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department have partnered to bring the youth ski rental program back to Caribou for all local youth.
This year, seasonal rentals will be available for all Caribou youths and includes skis, boots, poles and a carrier for a fee of $60, plus a $20 refundable deposit upon the return of the equipment in the spring.
The official sign-up and fitting night is slated for Thursday, Nov. 21 from 6:30-8:20 p.m. at the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center.
