Leader in potato production — Maine shows the largest potato crop per acre of any of the states of the Union according to the statement just issued by the Crop Reporting Board of the Department of Agriculture. In 1913, Maine produced 220 bushels per acre as compared with her 198 bushels per acre last year. Its closest rival this year is Colorado with a record of only 115 bushels per acre.
Of local interest — Will Grant and Harley Dow (of Patten) have gone to Harvey’s Siding to work in the woods and expect to be gone until Christmas. Foreman H. F. Mansfield of the B. & A. paint crew, has taken possession of the building formerly used as a blacksmith shop, which he will use as headquarters. Sold through the Northern Maine Real Estate Agency, C. O. Grant, Mgr., the Estabrook store at Smyrna Mills to C. B. Noyes and L. A. Leavitt.

Houlton’s Clark leads tax fight — Mrs. Virginia Donnell Clark of Court Street today was named to lead local women in the nationwide drive of the National Consumers Tax Commission against “all unnecessary taxes that increase the cost of living. The commission is described as a non-political organization conducting a drive by housewives of the nation against hidden and direct taxes that burden consumers.

COLLEGE STANDOUT — Joe Dobbins was elected to the captaincy of the state championship basketball team at Colby College in Waterville at a victory banquet given in honor of the 1938 squad. “Joe,” a former Ricker star, was used as a forward and center by Coach Eddy Roundy but did not come into his own until being moved to the guard position late in the Mule season. Dobbins also figured strongly into the Colby baseball prospects.
Baxter State Park gains 6,000 acres — Maine received another substantial gift this week when former Governor Percival P. Baxter presented to Governor Barrows and the Executive Council 6,000 acres of land in the Katahdin area to be added to the Baxter State Park.

Manuel game area proposed for Hodgdon — Roland T. Speers, commissioner of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Game has termed a proposal of the Pioneer Times to name the new game management area in Hodgdon in honor of the late Lt. Gordon Manuel, as an “excellent idea.”
McLaughlin wins driver recognition — Local high school students participated recently in a national testing program to select the nation’s outstanding teenage driver. The makers of “Prestone” anti-freeze, who offered the program, announced the local winner this week as Michael A. McLaughlin of Houlton High School.

Lady Shires receive special honors — The Houlton girls Eastern Maine Championship soccer team recently had five girls receiving special honors. Laura and Sara Buswell received top honors by being named to first team All-Aroostook, first team All-Eastern Maine and first team Portland Sunday Telegram All-State, Sara received best offensive award and Laura received the coaches award; Anne Marciniak was named to the second team All-Aroostook, first team All-Eastern Maine and first team Portland Sunday Telegram All-State and also received the best defensive award; Holly Stewart was named to second team All-Aroostook and received the coaches award; while Val Coolong was awarded the Army Most Valuable Player Award.
Student harvest results — Thirty two percent of the students in SAD 70 earned a total of $42,774 during the 1988 potato harvest, members of the district’s Board of Directors learned last Monday night.
