Editor’s note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Public Library highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by their staff.
Did you ever wonder why cats do what they do or how to have them do what you want?
Our book this week “The Cat Whisperer,” by Mieshelle Nagelschneider proposes to give you answers to these questions and many others addressing cat behaviors, especially the unsavory ones. So, before you resort to giving your feline to the shelter, these are homegrown solutions, which might solve the problems, and let your pet stay with you.

By following the veteranarian-behaviorist’s C.A.T. plans for specific unruly behaviors, peace and tranquility may again reign in your house. “C.” denotes ways to “Cease” the targeted activity; “A.” stands for “Attract” the animal to new behaviors; and “T” gives ways to “transform” the area in subtle ways so the behaviors won’t return.
One important item new to me as a cat owner was the influence of outdoor roaming cats which disturb an indoor cat even when we cannot spy the outdoor animal. With an acute sense of smell the indoor cat feels threaten and will exhibit territorial marking behaviors from shredding curtains and rugs to spraying foul odors around the perimeters of “his territory”.
While the author tends to repeat and ramble around a topic frequently, the reading itself is easy to understand.  Ideas, directions and solutions are detailed and interesting to peruse, sounding entirely plausible and workable.
Yes, you will learn why cats do what they do and how to have them do what you want, Enjoy this and many other animal books throughout our well-stocked library.
