American Legion Post 136 of Stockholm will host its annual oratorical contest on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at 1 p.m. This is open to all high school students. There will be a monetary award.
This contest consists of two portions — a prepared, memorized oration and an assigned topic discourse. The subject must be about some phase of the Constitution of the United States, emphasizing the duties and obligations of a citizen to the United States government. This portion must be between 8-10 minutes. The assigned discourse will be one of four selected from the Articles and Sections of the Constitution and must be 3-5 minutes.
The local winner will compete at the district level and, if there are no other contestants, will automatically go on to state level which will be held in Waterville. There, the first-place winner will receive $1,000, second-place $500, and third-place $300. This winner will go on to the national contest, which will award an $18,000 scholarship.
