The money was awarded as part of the credit union’s Count on the County initiative and will be used to aid in habitat restoration at the Limestone site.

This $1,000 “Count On The County” award will help the refuge to demolish buildings, remove railroad track and fencing, and clear former base infrastructure to restore wetlands. The refuge is also working with the U.S. Air Force to restore a more than two-mile-long stream.
The County Federal Credit Union presented the $1,000 check on Thursday, Nov. 7.
Organizers established the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge when the U.S. Air Force transferred 4,700 acres to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1998. The refuge administers 2,400 acres of wetland conservation easements throughout Aroostook County, attracting a diverse variety of wildlife species.
The Count on The County initiative is presenting awards to non-profit organizations in Aroostook County within its field of membership each month through the end of the year. Anyone can nominate a deserving organization.
Applications are available in all branch locations and online at www.countyfcu.org.  Eligible entities must be 501(c) non-profit organizations in good standing.
