Ricker Rumblings

It’s another sunny Sunday here and a beautiful one at that. I’m told it is 23 degrees outside. It could be worse and could be better but we’ll take it.

The Christmas spirit is with us with a great big tree in the community room upstairs, many doors decorated with wreaths and other ornaments. The local Knights of Columbus is serving a lasagna dinner with all the fixings Saturday, Dec. 14, at St. Mary of the Visitation Church, from 5-7 p.m. Donations will be accepted.
For those who lost a child, a Worldwide Candle Lighting, “The Compassionate Friends,” supporting a family after a child dies was held at St. Mary of the Visitation Church Sunday. The service is a new one for me but it sure sounds inviting. I have not lost a child either by death or miscarriage, but many do.
Robin Chambers continues to surprise us with her cooking. Just this morning I had some delicious chocolate cookies. Thank you, Robin. That hit the spot. Eugene Foster is our newest tenant, lives on the third floor. He has a great view from his window. Thanks to Gary Keyes for his wonderful seafood chowder. Don’t I have wonderful friends!
Lavina Byron and sister Gerry Dunn attended a service at the Wesleyan Church one night last week. Kathryn Hall of Bangor was a recent overnight guest of her mother, Lois Downing. Also visiting was Kathy’s classmate and long time friend Beatrice Broder-Oldach of Ohio. It was nice to see you. Helen Folsom and her sister-in-law Lisa Hutchinson of Hodgdon were recent overnight shoppers in Bangor.
Several ladies finished an adult education course at Houlton High School—cooking school. We ended up with pizza and pesto, which was very good. Our teacher was Donald Holston.
Did I tell you about Timmy Blanchette, our mailman. His route has been changed. One day I didn’t receive my copy of the Houlton Pioneer Times. After a phone call, Timmy came back and there it was! He’s dedicated. Thank you, Tim.
To get back to Byrna (Mae Porter) Weir of Rochester, N.Y. regarding her letter to me dated Nov. 20, she asked if I ever heard of Chesley Waite, who moved from Newfoundland with his wife and two boys to Houlton in 1951 or 1952. The older son’s name was Berkeley, pronounced like Barkley. Chesley said that he had been a social worker, making visits in a boat, as they all lived in coastal towns. He later took courses at the University of Maine in Orono.
My bible quote is taken from Isaiah11:3: “Not by appearance shall be judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide.” As to the angel quote, here it is: “Today, hold your spirit close, and listen to the whisperings of angels.”
Take care and see you next week.
