Stabled at owner’s expense — The Selectmen have notified Chief Whitney to see that the ordinance relating to “Sliding on the Sidewalks” is strictly enforced. Chief Whitney has also received instructions that all horses left hitched around town and not properly covered, will be taken to a stable where the owner must pay for the care of the same.
Of local interest — W. A. Buck has a crew of men busily engaged packing the starch at the Watson Starch Factory (Monticello) and loading cars at the station. Carpenters, Butterfield, Fanjoy and Tidd have been making extensive repairs on the residence of Lenwood Rhoda. Schools in Dyer Brook are closed on account of a case of Diphtheria in town.

Christmas baking bargains — Advertised this week at Nation-Wide Service Grocers stores in the Houlton area: Bell’s Poultry Seasoning, 9 cents/pkg.; Hershey’s Chocolate, 2.5 lb. pkg., 25 cents; Pitted Dates, 10.5 oz. pkg., 15 cents; and Washburn’s Ribbon Candy, 2 lb. box, 33 cents.
Island Falls area news — Maurice Clark, who is employed by the Highway Department, is enjoying a vacation of two weeks. Mrs. Ronald Martin has been teaching in the Woodbridge Corner school a few days for her sister Mrs. Arnold Storm. Mrs. Carl Edwards is employed in the novelty department of W. E. Craig’s store during the holiday season. The store windows in town are in holiday array; one of the outstanding represents a seacoast scene with a rock island in the center on which a lighthouse stands.

Hagerman delivered post by horse — Arthur E. Hagerman, the last person to deliver parcel post from the Houlton Post Office by horse and carriage, has retired after nearly 40 years of service. Mr. Hagerman recalls that horses were used for parcel post when he joined the post office in 1924. It was two or three years later that the last horse gave way to a truck.

THE ISLAND FALLS ELKS — Rated as the team to beat this season in the Katahdin Valley Basketball League are the Elks from Island Falls High School. Smyrna celebrates the season — “It’s the first we’ve had in many, many years. “ said Kevin Brannan, chairman of the Smyrna Planning Board, in response to questions about the community Christmas tree erected in center city Smyrna. Tentatively planned for the day is a short program of Christmas music and caroling by those attending and the arrival of Santa on a horse-drawn sleigh.
Hoop news — The Houlton Shires basketball team continued their winning ways as the Shires defeated the Madawaska Owls by a score of 71-57, led by the strong play of Eric Coperthwaite who poured in 22 points while Mike Lee posted 15 and Aaron Peabody added 11. Led by Nancy Haggerty with 16 points, Karen Spurling with 14 and 12 from Carrie Dahl; the Houlton Lady Shires handed the Schenck Wolverines a loss last Thursday, 53-48.
