Black Hawks struggling as season gets under way

The Houlton-Hodgdon Black Hawks are winless in the early stages of their schedule, taking two more losses last week to Hampden Academy and Presque Isle .

Against Hampden Academy, the Black Hawks suffered the jinx of Friday the 13th, as the Broncos shut out the Black Hawks, 5-0 at Sawyer Arena.
Matt Closson and Mike Ward provided the offensive prowess for Hampden Academy with two goals apiece. Each player also added an assist in the game. Dylan Cray added a single tally, while Riley Eastman and Jordan Dysart each accounted for two assists.
Houlton-Hodgdon Black Hawk goalie Chase Brewer stopped 30 of 35 shots faced, while Hampden goalie Ryan Manning was perfect with 25 saves on 25 shots.
In last Wednesday’s game at the Forum in Presque Isle, the Wildcats overtook Houlton-Hodgdon, 4-1.
PI outshot the guests by a 25-10 margin over the first two periods and 33-18 in the game.
Presque Isle scored early as Alex Michaud converted off assists by Tyler Seeley and Trevor Levesque 2:24 into the opening period.
The Wildcats then made it 3-0 with goals 2:44 apart in the second. Michaud found the back of the net at the 7:13 mark, with Seeley and Cooper Madore coming up with the assists. At 9:57, Seeley tallied off assists from Joseph Patenaude and Levesque to give PI the comfortable lead.
After the combination of brothers, Josh and Brandon Malone finally put Houlton-Hodgdon on the scoreboard 8:47 into the final period, PI’s Mikey Michaud scored off an assist from Seeley to wrap up the scoring.
Black Hawk goalie Brewer blocked 29 of 33 shot attempts, while Presque Isle’s keeper in his first start, Oliver Gerrish made 17 saves on 18 shots.
“I thought we controlled the play from start to finish, but their goalie, Chase Brewer, played very well,” said Presque Isle coach Carl Flynn.
