• Lions sponsor seasonal events — The Caribou Lions royally entertained over 100 needy children of Caribou at the Aroostook Motors showrooms Friday night at their second annual Christmas party. In addition, one of the outstanding social events of the town will be held Monday evening Jan. 2 when the Caribou Lions Club will sponsor a New Year’s Ball at the Caribou High School.
• Book of the week — The featured Book of the Week at the Caribou Public Library is “While England Slept” by Winston Churchill. The review states, “In this book Mr. Churchill presents a complete review of the international situation since 1932…Today Winston Churchill’s political star is again ascending. He is, unquestionably, at the moment England’s most powerful non-office-holding statesman, and his speeches invariably fill the House of Commons to overflowing.”

• Safely through the fire — The old 2,000 pound safe in the Knox Bros. Machine shop came through the fire in the Water Street structure last Monday morning with “flying colors.” The building was completely destroyed by the fire but contents of the safe, including $600 cash in a money bag, were virtually undamaged. Police are investigating the cause of the blaze as well as the possibility that an attempt was made to open the safe before the fire.

• NEXRAD radar comes to Caribou — The National Weather Service Office in Caribou will triple in size and staff over the next four years, as one of four New England stations to be equipped with the new million-dollar NEXRAD radar system. Meteorologist in charge was Tom McClelland.
• Woodland PTA celebrates 30th carnival — At the monthly meeting of the Woodland PTA, a brief meeting of the winter carnival was held. Committee members discussing the school’s 30th annual carnival were Verna Espling, Linda Norsworthy, Ruth Jacobs, Nancy Beaver, Claire St. Peter and Rilda Anderson. Scott Paul was winner of the winter carnival and awarded a $5 cash prize. The chosen theme is “Moments in Time.”
