New parents Lem and Betsy Randall of Lake Placid, New York, proudly welcomed their first child, Maverick A. Randall, into the world on Jan. 2, 2014, at 3:21 a.m. at Cary Medical Center. Baby Maverick has the distinction of being the very first baby born in Aroostook County in the new year. The couple were in the area visiting relatives for the holidays. Betsy Randall, originally from Presque Isle, was due on New Year’s Eve, and when labor was imminent the couple decided to have the baby at Cary. He was delivered by Dr. Josette Hunter, OB/GYN with Pines Health Services, and weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces, and was 22 inches long. The family were showered with gifts for their new little one, including a handmade blue, penguin-themed quilt by the Crown of Maine Quilters, New Year’s baskets stuffed with items donated by the Cary Auxiliary and Machias Savings Bank, and other gifts from the hospital. Gathered at the gift presentation are, from left, Ellen Corrow, Cary Auxiliary member; Judith-Green Tarr of the Crown of Maine Quilters; parents Lem and Betsy Randall, with baby Maverick; Barb Collins, April Caron, Roberta Walton, Dot Wakem and Mary Harrigan, all Cary Auxiliary members; and, kneeling, Auxiliary President Allyson Masse.
