CARIBOU — Two new Caribou city councilors were sworn in to their three-year terms during the council’s organizational meeting on Jan. 2.
Councilor David Martin was re-elected to serve the city, and has been a councilor since 2008; Councilor Joan Theriault had previously served on council for over a year, after being appointed to a vacant seat on the municipal board in 2012.

While the two elected councilors were sworn in during the last meeting, the council also formally announced a vacancy on the board that resulted from an elected candidate of the November election being found ineligible to hold the office of the one-year seat; City Manager Austin Bleess explained that the council will need to appoint someone to fill the vacancy until an election can be held.
Council stated their intention to appoint someone during their next meeting on Monday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. in the councilors’ chambers.
During the Jan. 2 meeting, council also elected a new mayor and deputy mayor: councilor Gary Aiken was once more elected to serve the community as mayor in a vote of 5-1, with one vote received for Joan Theriault. Councilor David Martin was unanimously elected  deputy mayor.
