Rain this morning and snow this afternoon on Sunday, Jan. 19. Ah, the weather, we always talk about it.
A dear friend, Winnie Briggs, celebrated her 93rd birthday on Jan. 15. If you see Winnie at Military Street Apartments, please wish her a happy year. My angel quote, usually found at the end of the column, now in the center today: “Fly on, sweet spirit, and make straight and safe the path, I must walk today.”
On our bulletin board is this notice: “Rent Rebate: United Way of Aroostook will be at the Learning Center, 18 Military Street March 8. If anyone would like help filling out his or her rent rebate form, please call 764-5197 to set up an appointment.” The rent rebate was a popular rebate but the system has changed. Call the number for verification or for help.
Our weekly bulletin of St. Mary Church reveals the date of the St. Patrick Bazaar as March 15. Volunteers are needed — if you can help in any way, please call the rectory at 532-2871 for details. Many names are on the prayer line. If you have someone you would like to pray for, get on the list or call me and I will help you, 532-2125.
Sympathy is extended to the family of Kenneth Bither, who died recently at his home in Linneus. Our liaisons, Brian and Charlene Henderson, are Ken’s brother-in-law and sister-in-law. May Ken rest in peace. Many are observing Martin Luther King Day Monday. In “my day” no such holiday existed then, but several stores observe this holiday plus the government in some places and post offices.
This is the time of year when we replace our old calendar with a new one or decorate our doors with different new designs and creations. Some doors are already decorated with pictures and other ornaments. Two doors come to mind: Lavina Byron and her sister Gerry Dunn. If you are passing either doors, you’ll see what I mean.
A friend gave me an old magazine dated Feb. 16, 1951, U.S. News & World Report. On page 19 of this magazine was the article “Remember back in 1939 (Year) when you could shop and get change from $1? Here are some of the prices: Then, round steak, 29 cents; now, $1.05; then men’s suit, $25; now, $56; automobile, then $778, now, $1,738; coffee, then 21 cents, now, 86 cents; wool rug, then, $65, now, $168. Oh, for those prices again. Please remember the year was 1939.
What do you get when you cross a toy with an elf? A present that wraps itself.
Pope Francis is in the news again. The Pope, head of the Roman Catholic Church, was given a Harley (motorcycle). He didn’t ride the Harley, but turned the funds he acquired from it into the food pantry for the poor. What a cool, but true story.
My bible quote is: “the Lord has sent me…that you may regain your sight and be filled with the holy spirit.” (Acts 9:17)
Have a happy week, one of love and joy.
