• Reuben Anderson commenced Monday clerking in David Friend & Son’s clothing store.
• A party composed of P. S. Goud, B. J. Smith, Alonzo Lufkin, J. C. Leeman, E. G. Farrell, Stephen Salsbury, Frank Smith, John Allen, George Wright and William Gustin of Aroostook Valley Lodge No. 88, I. O. O. F. visited Fort Fairfield Tuesday evening.
100 Years Ago-Jan. 22, 1914
• The Criminal Docket, November 1913 — Included in the docket are some of the following charges and sentences imposed: Cheating by false pretenses, to be imprisoned in the county jail for the term of four months; Beating a horse, to pay fine of $50 and costs of prosecution taxed at $20; Working on the Lord’s day, Nol Pros on payment of $5.03 costs; and Keeping intoxicating liquor, to pay a fine of $100 and costs taxed at $10.
• Of local interest — The heavy snowstorms of the past week have made the roads very bad. We (on the East Washburn Road) welcomed the road breakers two days ago. We were beginning to think they had forgotten us down here.
Ford’s latest model — The advertisement reads: Ford Model T Touring Car f.o.b. Detroit, $550, “Buy it Because it’s a Better Car.” Get particulars from S. W. Collins & Son, Caribou agents for Aroostook County.

• Potatoes as motor fuel — At a meeting of the Victoria County Board of Trade in New Brunswick, an interesting address was presented by Guy C. Porter of Perth, relative to establishment of a potato alcohol distillery. Last December, the U. S. Government made an appropriation of $4 million to build four research laboratories. One of the first assignments given the Peoria laboratory was to study the feasibility of making power alcohol from grains, potatoes and other farm products. In Europe we find the manufacture of alcohol from potatoes and sugar beets for motor fuel purposes is on the rise. In Japan, an appropriation has just been made to manufacture motor fuel from potatoes, molasses and chrysanthemum bulbs.
• A good year for 4-H — The year 1938 has been a good year for 4-H club work in Aroostook County, says County Club Agent Rachel Adams. Thirty-four of the county’s 38 clubs received national seals of achievement. Highest ranking club members (Caribou area) for the year in different projects were: chick raising, Donald Cogswell, Fort Fairfield; sweet corn, Wilson Ellis, Castle Hill; dairy, Richard Sjostedt, Stockholm; pigs, Albert Getchell, Limestone; potatoes, Wilbert Anderson, New Sweden; cooking and housekeeping, Ada McNally of Portage.

• New $1.1 million high school proposed — The Caribou Budget Committee Tuesday night heard the School Committee’s capital investment proposal for a new $1,153, 320 high school building presented in lieu of the committee’s earlier proposal for an extension to the present high school. The committee figures on 14 additional teachers if the new building is granted and operating costs of $127,000 per year.
• Winter weddings — Announcement has been received from Mrs. Hilma Hede that Miss Joan Bell of Anchorage, Alaska, and Howard H. Hede, formerly of Stockholm, Maine, were united in marriage at the Central Lutheran Church, Anchorage on Dec. 20. Patricia Elaine Rowley of Branford, Conn., became the bride of PFC Delmar D. Tracy Jr., son of Mrs. Adrian Nadeau of Branford and Delmar D. Tracy of Caribou; the couple plan to make their home in Verona, Italy where PFC Tracy is stationed.

• Casco Northern sells to Peoples Heritage — Peoples Heritage Bank will acquire six Casco Northern Bank branches throughout Aroostook County in addition to the Easton office it purchased last month, bank officials said Friday. Besides the Easton office, those involved in the sale are Fort Fairfield, Limestone, Loring Air Force Base, Van Buren, Eagle Lake and Mars Hill.
• Scouting news — Boy Scout Troop 184 of Caribou is currently looking for three slide projectors for use at scout award ceremonies; those interested in donating one may contact Scoutmaster Vaughn Keaton. Boy Scout Troop 186 of Woodland will host a turkey dinner with the proceeds to benefit the scouts’ Augusta trip. Brownie Troop 27 and leaders Karen Anderson and Pat Quist held an investiture ceremony Tuesday at the Stockholm Lutheran Church; troop members are Monica Jones, Anna Sprague, Hope Sund, Michelle Ouellette, Pamela Picket, Cassie Anderson, Mindy Harpine, Christina Murphy and Cathy Quist.
