Hume receives Boston Post Cane
as Easton’s oldest citizen

The Boston Post Cane Award was presented to Avis Hume for being Easton’s oldest citizen.
The cane is in a display case at the Easton Town Office. Her plaque read: “Boston Post Cane Award, Presented to Avis Hume, Born Aug. 18, 1916, 97 years old, Presented January 2014.”

The first round of the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee was held at the Easton Jr/SrHigh School Gymnasium on Jan. 15. The Easton School Department would like to extend congratulations to the winner, Katelyn White, and the runner up, Matthew Quimby. Katelyn is the daughter of Bruce and Elaine White; and Matthew is the son of Timothy Quimby and Svava Cushing. Katelyn and Matthew will represent the Easton School Department at the Aroostook County Spelling Bee. This will be held on Thursday, Feb. 6, in the Fox Auditorium at the University of Maine at Fort Kent.
Readingeggs

Owen Henderson and Chloe Lento, from left in the above picture, and Chloe Blackstone and Chase Flewelling, from left below, are all hard at work on their “Readingeggs.” Readingeggs is a customized computer-based reading program in which each child progresses at their own levels. First-graders have been helping their kindergarten friends learn how to log into not only the school computers, but their Readingeggs accounts as well!
Winter Ball
The 2014 Winter Ball, hosted by 2013 Easton Queens Cassandra Buck and Anna Tompkins, is set to be held Jan. 31. The ball will be held from 6-10 p.m. and is open to all area students in 7th grade and up. It will be held at the Easton Odd Fellows Hall. Cost is $6 at the door. Food and drink are included, as well as a live DJ. All proceeds will help sponsor the upcoming 2014 Easton Community Fund-raising Pageant. For any additional questions, call Tina at 768-0798.
Happy Days meeting
The Easton Senior Happy Days Club will meet at the Manor on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 11:30 a.m. for a pizza party and meeting. Installation of the new officers will take place at this meeting. All Easton seniors are invited to attend, and bring a friend, for a delicious dinner and interesting conversations.
Upcoming Rec programs
New exercise class for older adults: Senior Swagger. If you love to dance, but have difficulty standing or walking for long periods of time, Senior Swagger class is just for you. Senior Swagger exercise is a chair-based fitness program that uses upbeat music, but modifies the dance moves to allow participants to be seated while exercising.
Senior Swagger class lasts 30 minutes. This program will run this program on Wednesdays, Jan. 22 and 29, at 1 p.m. in the Recreation Room at the Manor. If there is an interest in the program it may continue. Come check it out!

Wednesday, Jan. 22 — Junior Activities at the Hall from 9:30-11 a.m. Senior Swagger cancelled for today only! BOKWA after-school at the Hall until 4:15 p.m. Grades 5 and 6 co-ed basketball practice from 4:30-6 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 23 — Snowshoeing after school at the Science Center on Route 1A until 4:15 p.m. The cost is $1. Grades 5 and 6 co-ed basketball versus Washburn at 5 p.m. at home.
Friday, Jan. 24 — Junior Activities at the Hall from 9:30-11 a.m. Senior Pizza and Puzzle Day at the Manor starting at 11:15 a.m. Little Bears cheerleading after school in the cafeteria until 4 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 25 — Little Bears 1st and 2nd grade practice from 9-10 a.m. in the elementary school gym. Little Bears 3rd and 4th grade practice from 10-11:15 a.m. in the elementary school gym. Grades 5 and 6 boys’ basketball practice from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the elementary school gym.
Monday, Jan. 27 — Adult Nutrition Class at the Manor starting at 11 a.m. The cost is $3. After-school cooking program at the Hall until 4:15 p.m. This month’s theme is “Gluten Free Kids.” We will be making chocolate chip scones.
Tuesday, Jan. 28 — BigRock sizing day at Easton Elementary starting at 11:15 a.m. Fifth and sixth grade basketball game at Mars Hill at 3:30 p.m. First and second grade Little Bears’ basketball team at high school basketball game at 6:30 p.m.
