Last week of regular high school season

    Teams are entering the last week of the high school regular basketball season, as they look forward to the Eastern Maine Tournament in Bangor at the Cross Center.
    Class C will take the top 11 teams, with Houlton holding the top sport with a 14-0 record.

    In Class D, Hodgdon is third; SACS, fourth and Katahdin, 14th. In D, 16 teams qualify for postseason.
    The boys preliminary games will be played on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
    In last week’s action, Houlton ignited for 102 points on Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium, as all 11 players scored in the game. The Shiretowners scored the first 23 points of the game, leading to a 54-14 halftime cushion en route to the 102-38 win over Madawaska.
    Nick Guiod paced Houlton with a game-high 21 points, six assists and five steals. Kyle Bouchard tossed in 18 points and had eight rebounds, along with four steals. Elyjah Crockett netted 13 points and brought down six boards, while Isaac Cone scored nine points; Jacob Drew and Jacob Worthley each had eight; Cameron Graham and Christian Crane each chipped in with seven points, while Noah Holmes added five; Jake Condon, four and Jacob Donovan had a basket.
    Senior Ian Lee scored 20 points for the Owls, who dropped to 5-11.
    The Hodgdon Hawks met Central Aroostook twice last week, coming away with two wins.
    In Mars Hill last Thursday, the Hawks outscored the Panthers, 22-7, in the first quarter to go on to a 59-45 win.     
    “The first quarter saw scoring from four of the five starters with Chris Hudson leading the way with nine in the quarter,” said Hodgdon coach Rob Smith. “The second half began with the Hawks leading, 34-14, and in the third we again reached 22 points for the quarter while holding the Panthers to six points.”
    The third quarter saw five Hodgdon scorers with Tyler Sherman leading the way with seven points.
    The Panthers were led by Emory Davis and Nick Dominique with eight points apiece and Dustin Pryor and Spencer Garrison added seven each.
    The Hawks were led by Hudson’s game high 17 points. Keegan Gardner added 12 and Sherman had 11.
    The Hawks move on to 13-3 on the season while the Panthers dropped to 6-7.
    In Hodgdon last Tuesday night, the Hawks won 57-34 behind Deyrell Vargas’ 20-point effort.
    The Hawks led 19-2 to start the game and built a lead of 29-6 at intermission. By the end of three, Hodgdon was well in control, 48-19.
    Hodgdon’s Hudson posted 13 points for the 12-3 Hawks, while Sherman added nine points and Daden Palmer chipped in with eight.
    The Panthers were led by Garrison with 12 and Clark Bradbury with six more.
    On Monday, the Southern Aroostook boys traveled to Ashland and came home with a 74-50 win, as Jackson Mathers fired in 23 points; Cameron Landry scored 19 and Nolan Altvater added 10 more.
    For Ashland, Cody Blair knocked down 15 points and Michael Cook had 10.
    Last Friday in Dyer Brook, the Warriors overtook Katahdin, 45-31.
    Cody Lassonde pumped in 16 points, while Cameron Landry tossed in 13 points and Jackson Mathers chipped in with eight.
    Wyatt Morse led the Cougars with 14 points.
    The Warriors were defeated last Tuesday night in Woodland, 64-40.
    The game was close in the opening minutes with Woodland leading, 18-12, but in the second quarter, the Dragons erupted for a 14-4 scoring run to break the game open at halftime, 32-16. After three, the Dragons extended their lead, 41-24.
    Landry was the only double-figure scorer for Southern Aroostook with 18 points, as Lassonde added seven.
    Ryan McIver led Woodland with 15 points and Toby Tomah posted 14 points and nine rebounds.
    On Monday, the East Grand Vikings suffered their second loss to Shead, 69-52, in Danforth.
    The Tigers led at the quarter breaks: 18-11; 36-20; and 52-31.
    Logan Crone scored a game-high 24 points, while Kenny Winiarski knocked down 14. Alex Stoddard and Philip Farley each dropped in six points.
    The Shead Tigers handed visiting East Grand a 65-52 loss last Wednesday in Eastport.
    East Grand was paced by Winiarski’s game-high 28 points, with Crone adding nine points in the game.
