Hero nominations are needed for 16th annual Real Hero Award Breakfast

For 15 years the local American Red Cross Chapter has recognized some of the Real Heroes amongst the community — people whose courage, kindness and unselfish character deserve public recognition. The Aroostook County Branch of the Pine Tree Chapter is urging individuals and organization to nominate one or more people to be a 2014 Real Hero.

A committee of community leaders will choose from among the nominees to receive Real Heroes awards at the 16th annual Real Heroes Breakfast on Saturday, May 10 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Fort Fairfield Community Center. This event is hosted by TAMC, WAGM –TV and Cary Medical Center.
Because The County has so many exceptional individuals, more than one Real Hero nomination may be submitted. Those who nominate the selected award recipients are also invited to the breakfast.
“The Real Heroes Breakfast grew out of a desire to develop an event that is closely related to the mission of the American Red Cross, which is to help people save lives,” said Joyce Knorr, the Aroostook County branch manager. “The Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Over a million Red Cross volunteers accomplish this every day of the year through the simple, yet powerful process of someone putting his or her own needs aside to help others,” she added. “I can think of no better way to celebrate this spirit of humanitarianism then by nominating and recognizing heroes in our own community.”
To obtain a 2014 Red Cross Real Hero nomination form, please call 498-5050 or email Joyce.Knorr@redcross.org. Nominations can also be made by visiting www.mainered cross.org and obtaining a form. All Real Hero nominees should live, work, or study in Aroostook County and have performed his, her or their heroic act between Feb. 7, 2013 and March 13, 2014. Time has been extended this year due to change in date for the breakfast.
The completed nomination form should be returned to Knorr at the Aroostook County Branch of the Pine Tree Chapter by fax, mail, or email no later than noon on Friday, March 14. Submission information is included on the nomination form.
Businesses and organizations can also be part of this notable event by sponsoring a table at the Real Heroes breakfast. Proceeds are used locally to assist Aroostook County disaster victims served by the Red Cross.
