Rec basketball league concludes

    PRESQUE ISLE — To kick off the final week of the season for the Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department grades 3-4 co-ed basketball league, Georgetown and North Carolina hit the hardwood.

    Georgetown’s Malachi Cummings and Noah Yarema both had 22 points, with point guard Benjamin Beaulieu adding nine more to the fierce offensive attack of Georgetown, who won, 53-18. North Carolina’s team was led by Jackson Maynard and Kaden Tardif, both with eight points, with Sean Smith adding the first hoop of his young career.
    In the next matchup, Michigan topped Florida, 27-25. Michigan’s silent assassin, Caleb Nash, led the way for his team with 14 points, 10 of them coming in the second half. Also adding to the winner’s point total was Asher Tuttle with 11 and Dawson Beaulieu with two. For Florida, Josh Nadeau led the way with 19 points, while Logan Akeley added two layups and Matt Butler a jumper.
    Florida bounced back the next day as Nadeau had a game-high 16 points with Akeley chipping in with seven and Jacob Watt a couple hoops in the 27-20 triumph over Duke. Xavier McAtee scored 12 points, with 10 coming in the second half, and Jordan Higgins netted eight for Duke.
    The next game proved to be one of the classic games of the season, with Yarema’s layup in the closing seconds the difference in Georgetown’s 24-22 victory over Oregon in a contest pitting the top two teams in the league. Oregon led by seven after three quarters and was still ahead late when point guard Faith Sjoberg suffered an ankle injury and had to be replaced. The Hoyas played some inspired basketball down the stretch for the come-from-behind win.
    Michigan scored a 32-24 win over North Carolina behind Tuttle’s game-high 20 points. Beaulieu had six, Nash four and Breydan Jackson added a bucket of his own. North Carolina also recorded four scorers with Tardif leading the way with 11, Maynard netting six, Iziah Lessard four and Chase Cloukey a layup and a foul shot.
    In Duke’s 36-16 victory over Oregon, McAtee played stellar defense and added 18 points, followed by Higgins’ 16 and McKenna Mathie with a pair. For Oregon, Sjoberg led the way with 10 while teammate Cade Ennis added a basket. Corey White chipped in with a hoop and Ryllan Thibault also added a layup. 
    In other game summaries, Georgetown bested Indiana, 26-10, behind Yarema’s 13 points. Cleaves had six for the Hoosiers. Oregon pulled out a 22-20 win over Michigan behind eight points each by Sjoberg and Thibault. Nash scored eight for Michigan.
    Florida topped North Carolina, 39-12, with Nadeau and Butler scoring 17 and 14 points, respectively for the victors. Maynard had eight to lead the Tarheels. McAtee scored 18 points to pace Duke past Indiana, 26-12. Cleaves netted six for Indiana.
    Florida nipped Georgetown, 21-19, with Butler scoring nine and Nadeau eight for the Gators to lead the charge. Cummings tallied nine in the loss. Indiana captured a 15-12 victory over North Carolina behind Cleaves’ seven points. Cloukey led a balanced North Carolina attack with four points. In the final game of the season, Michigan ousted Duke, 29-23, behind Beaulieu’s career-best 16 points. McAtee scored 10 for Duke.
