The Aroostook League championships for skiing got underway Tuesday with a classical-style meet held at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle. The slalom and GS championships are set for Saturday in Fort Kent, while the Nordic freestyle event is next Tuesday, Feb. 11 at Madawaska.
Skiers got ready for the championships with a Nordic meet in Caribou Friday and an alpine event the following day at Fort Kent.
Caribou High School was the site of classic races. The Viking girls and boys were victorious, as the girls featured five of the six fastest finishers to score 12 points and the boys had five of the top seven for a meet-low 13 points.

The remaining scores in the girls’ meet were Fort Kent with 29, Madawaska with 55 and Fort Fairfield with 66. Presque Isle did not figure in the team results as only two skiers competed.
The girls’ top 10 consisted of Sarah Doak of Caribou, 21:06; Lauren Chapman of Caribou, 22:23; Jordan Tanguay of Fort Kent, 23:19; Eileen Patton of Caribou, 23:20; Kendra Furber of Caribou, 23:47; Emma Belyea of Caribou, 23:52; Rudy Martin of Fort Kent, 24:01; Sirena Cyr of Caribou, 24:27; Madeline Gudde of Caribou, 24:28; and Kelsey Pelletier of Fort Kent, 25:03.
On the boys’ side, following Caribou was Fort Kent with 41, Madawaska with 50 and PI with 54. Fort Fairfield also had just two competitors and had no team score.
Finishing among the top 10 were: Riley McDuffie of Caribou, 17:36; Keith Draper of Caribou, 17:49; Matt Toussaint of Fort Kent, 18:10; Michael Marquis of Caribou, 18:22; Tim Deschenes of Madawaska, 19:18; Lukas Lagasse of Caribou, 19:24; Alex Murchison of Caribou, 19:26; Noah Rossignol of Presque Isle, 19:36; Thomas Krause of Fort Fairfield, 19:50; and Jared Michaud of Fort Kent, 20:02.
At Fort Kent Saturday, the host Warriors swept all four competitions.
Local skiers in the top 10 in the girls’ slalom were Samantha Kearney of Central Aroostook, fourth in 1:29.58; Cameo Madore of Presque Isle, ninth in 1:35.96; and Shannon Sweeney of PIHS, 10th in 1:39.45.
In the GS, Kearney was again fourth in 1:48.94, while Madore was seventh in 1:51.86 and Sweeney ninth in 1:54.5.
The boys’ slalom saw Bryce Smith of PI place fourth in 1:19.63, Central Aroostook’s Cody Clayton fifth in 1:19.97, PI’s Kyle MacCallum seventh in 1:23.5 and Chris Carroll eighth in 1:24.93; CA’s Devon Faulkner ninth in 1:26.18 and PI’s Jon Saucier 10th in 1:32.4.
The GS top 10 consisted of Clayton, who was second in 1:43.4; and PI’s Nick Bartlett, fifth in 1:44.44; Smith, sixth in 1:45.01; Carroll, ninth in 1:47.49; and MacCallum, 10th in 1:47.57.
Caribou’s Tyler Strid was 14th in the slalom in 1:42.72 and 13th in the GS in 1:56.3 as his team’s only competitor.
