The Mars Hill United Methodist Women met in the church vestry at noon on March 3 with seven members attending. After the food blessing, sandwiches, chips and drinks were enjoyed.
A delicious dessert of apple pie and ice cream was made and served by Joan Boone, co-chairman for the day. The vestry was beautifully decorated in the Easter motif.
After an hour of socializing, the business meeting was conducted by President Donna Brewer. She led all in the Purpose Pledge and Prayer. The secretary’s report by Clara Hussey was read and approved as read. Diane Ketchum gave the treasurer’s report and read the correspondence.
On Wednesday, March 5, the church was to be opened at noon for a brief Ash Wednesday service. President Donna announced that on Sunday, March 9, there was to be a Cluster Lenten Service at the church, with the Mars Hill church providing hot dishes, casseroles, rolls and drinks while visitors will be responsible for salads and sweets.
The UMW received a reward for reaching the five-point star unit requirement.
After the benediction, the meeting was turned over to co-chairman Joan Walsh. After reading a portion of scripture, she passed out material for each member to read of the life of different disciples. They also read a passage of “For This Hour.” Members are to have good thoughts, serve others, have a positive attitude and always live the Christian life. As the program was on “Prayer and Self Denial,” a collection was taken for the UMW Headquarters World Christian Ministries.
Members attending were: Donna Brewer, Joan Walsh, Joan Boone, Elaine Bailey, Gaye Cronkite, Diane Ketchum and Clara Hussey.

Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on March 4 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. Members discussed the turkey dinner being put on by the Rotary Club during Winterfest activities.
Rotarian Larry Fletcher, owner of A&M Auto Repair and Larry’s Adult Day Care, led the group in a trip down memory lane. It was enlightening for members that have moved to the area to learn of all the businesses that were once in town: three grocery stores, three barbers, two drug stores, jewelry and clothing shops. There was also a police force and jail. Memories of what school was like “back in the day” were mentioned, with those kids that lived in town being expected to walk to school! There were boys’ and girls’ entries into school and in high school the boys and girls had separate homerooms.
Cigarettes could be bought from a machine and gas was 19 cents a gallon. Seatbelts weren’t common and no one had to wear a helmet to ride a bike.
Larry remembered leaving after school on a Friday afternoon with some friends and driving to Bangor to McDonald’s for dinner. It took a lot longer in those days as the Interstate didn’t exist.
